The smoke of a city is rising between green hills, the Atlantic Ocean is stretched out in the distance. The fertile meadows around the young city of Boston are still undeveloped. Thomas Cole (1801-1848), one of the most important painters of the American landscape art of the 19th century, captured this view of Boston on his canvas in 1839.
